A GLIMPSE AT JAINTIA HISTORY

This trip will introduce you to the rich history of the Jaintia community which spans several hundreds of years and is chronicled in many historical accounts and poignant monuments.

Nartiang is the main stop of this trip – the erstwhile capital of the Jaintiapur kingdom. It is known for its garden of monoliths, menhirs and dolmens erected as a tribute to kings and generals and also as monuments to ancestors and the dear departed. The garden of monoliths in Nartiang is the largest collection of these unique installations, some which are as old as five hundred years – the tallest standing at more than eight metres and dedicated to the great warrior U Mar Phalyngki. Apart from learning about the symbolism and modern-day significance of the monoliths, you can also visit the fascinating Durga Temple of Nartiang. This temple draws many visitors every year and has a history of human sacrifice and to this day, the sacrificial shaft which connects to the nearby river remains. Another temple nearby houses some old canons – unique military relics of the Jaintia kings that might interest history enthusiasts.

This trip also includes a round of Jowai town and the beautiful Ialong Eco Park, a tranquil spot located close to a sacred forest and offering mesmerizing views of the Myntdu river and the surrounding valleys. Syntu-ksiar is another important stop on this itinerary – known for its scenery and a monument dedicated to freedom fighter Kiang Nong Bah. Tyrchi Falls and Thadlaskein Lake are also some more pretty sights to look forward to.
